Description
This is a vintage late Art Deco to early mid century sterling silver lady’s compact. It is marked Hand Made in Siam, Sterling, Thainakon. Nice and weighty solid sterling silver. The inside is missing its mirror but the separate bezel for the side that holds powder is intact. It has that nice soft, sleek aged silver feel in the hand and is also quite shallow indicative of the Art Deco era rather than very deep. Size measures 3″ across in diameter. Depth is just over 1/8″. Weight is 72.5 grams. The locking latch is present and when pressed down you can hear the loud locking snap but it doesn’t stay locked once you release the latch. So, it will need a latch adjustment and a small mirror glued into on side. The niello work is all intact; it medium matte finish black; not a shiny black, more like a raw black granite or slate black. The dancer are beautifully etched into the sterling on both sides and you can see that they were done by an experienced hand. Both are very intricately detailed and well crafted. As of today the scrap sterling silver price is just about $2/gram. This is a lovely older vintage handmade compact for your vintage and antique lady’s accessories collection or vanity display.
