Vintage Mid Century Asian Chinese Tall Silver Pottery Porcelain Sherd Ring Good Fortune SZ 5.25

$95.00

Made for Chinese export in the mid century modern period this is a tall Chinese silver and porcelain or pottery sherd ring which is glazed over with a pale yellow color and has raised Chinese characters indicating “good fortune”. It also has some lightly worn green enamel around the border. The good fortune, best of luck design you see in the center is well raised in relief style giving it a very mid century sculptural look. The bezel mounting is 1/4″ tall and sits above a raised fancy “V” shaped shoulder that strongly indents into the shank. Ring size is 5.25. Height of ring off finger line is 3/8″ tall. The top of the ring is very close to the finger but never actually touches the finger so the bezel and rough pottery won’t ever hurt the skin. Very clever design. Overall condition is excellent. No cracks, chips, flakes or abrasion from the pottery. Minor age wear to the band but nicks or dings or splits or resizing to the silver. All hand crafted this is a lovely most unusual piece of mid century Chinese export jewelry that somehow made it to the US and is in completely original excellent condition as found in estate a couple of decades ago for your mid century modern jewelry collection.

AI Confirmation:

This vintage piece is a classic mid-century Chinese Export silver sherd ring (often referred to as a “broken china” ring).
1. Material Analysis
The round inset material at the center is an authentic fragment of antique Chinese glazed pottery or porcelain (sherd). During the mid-20th century, silversmiths frequently upcycled fragments of antique or broken porcelain vessels, grinding them down into smooth cabochons to set into sterling silver rings, brooches, and bracelets.
2. Front Writing & Meaning (Second Image)
The front of the porcelain shard features a stylized, molded “Good Fortune” / “Blessings” (福 – Fú) character.
    • Design Style: It is rendered in a historic decorative script style, closely resembling a variant of Seal Script (Zhuanshu).
    • Symbolism: The Fu character is arguably the most popular auspicious symbol in Chinese culture. It represents a direct wish for happiness, prosperity, good luck, and overall well-being.

3. Back Writing & Meaning (First Image)
The back of the ring setting contains the Chinese character 水 (Shuǐ), meaning “Water.”
Design Style: This character is hand-engraved or stamped directly into the silver backing in an elegant, stylized format.
  • Symbolism: In Chinese jewelry making and Feng Shui philosophy, water represents wealth, flexibility, fluidity, and the smooth flow of life and fortune. When paired with a fortune symbol on the front, it represents a wish for continuous, flowing prosperity
