Description
This is a small and unusual 1940s Art Deco sterling silver Miraculous Mary pendant, medal, charm, fob. It is marked Sterling and guaranteed solid sterling silver. The front is also very detailed with a filigreed and beveled border, a full figure of Mary and the following prayer around the inner border: “O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee”. The edge is scalloped all the way around. The cross, “M”, and stars on the back of a Miraculous Medal are deeply symbolic elements from a vision of the Virgin Mary experienced by French nun Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830. Size is 7/8″ north to south with the bail by 1/2″ wide east to west. It came from a very old estate years ago and is in original, excellent, gently used condition. No dents or dings or scratches. No damage or repair. Never altered or repaired. It was likely used originally as a rosary dangle, pendant for a small woman, or as part of a reliquary charm. This is a lovely Art Deco addition for your vintage religious Catholic and jewelry collection.
The imagery on the back represents the inseparable connection between Jesus, Mary, and the Church:The Large “M”: Stands for Mary, intertwining with the Cross to symbolize her role as Mother, her presence at the foot of the cross, and her participation in Jesus’ mission to redeem humanity. The Cross: Represents Jesus Christ, His sacrifice for salvation, and His victory over sin. The bar underneath the cross represents the earth or the altar. The Twelve Stars: Symbolize the twelve Apostles, forming the foundation of the Church. They also recall the biblical vision in Revelation 12:1 of a “woman clothed with the sun” wearing a crown of twelve stars.Directly beneath the Cross and M, the medal also features two hearts: the Sacred Heart of Jesus (crowned with thorns) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (pierced by a sword), representing their deep love for humanity.
