About 1960s and 1970s Florenza Jewelry:
Florenza jewelry from the 1960s and 1970s is highly collectible costume jewelry known for its elaborate Victorian, Renaissance, and Egyptian revival styles, featuring rich, textured gold-tone metal, intricate filigree, and high-quality Austrian rhinestones or cameo settings. Founded by Daniel Kasoff, the brand produced detailed, romantic pieces often featuring cameos, faux pearls, and, during the 60s/70s, popular boutique items like lipstick holders and pillboxes.
Key Characteristics (1960s–1970s):
Design Aesthetic: Heavily influenced by the Victorian and Renaissance periods, often featuring bold, romantic, and detailed designs.
Materials & Techniques: Used high-quality stones from Austria, Germany, and the Orient, along with cameos, faux pearls, and unique, textured, or “antiqued” gold-plated metalwork.
Distinctive Features: Frequently featured textured backs, intricate, heavy chains (like book chains), and “Tiffany-style” prong settings for stones.
Product Range: Included brooches, charm bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and a popular line of vanity items (lipstick caddies, trinket boxes, mirrors).
Markings: Most pieces are signed “Florenza” or “Dan Kasoff Inc.” (often in a copyright symbol).
Contextual Details:
The “Fabulous” Era: The brand was often referred to as “Fabulous Florenza,” operating from the late 1940s until 1981.
Collaborations: Florenza produced jewelry for other brands, including Estee Lauder, Revlon, Hattie Carnegie, and Coro.
1970s Transition: Later, 1970s pieces sometimes featured less intricate designs or, toward the end, unsigned items sold with “Florenza N.Y.C.” hang tags.
Florenza pieces are sought after for their dramatic look, frequently styled with simple, modern clothing to create a contrast with their ornate, vintage appearance.
