DeNicola (1957–1973) was a high-quality, New York-based costume jewelry brand founded by Jerry DeNicola. Known for whimsical, detailed, and gold-tone designs, the company is famous for its 1960s zodiac series, marine life, and animal pins, often featuring faux stones. The brand, which produced “The Real Look” line, was acquired by Capri Jewelry in 1970 and ceased production in 1973.
Key History and Features:
Founder and Timeline: Jerry DeNicola founded the company in 1957 in New York City, creating pieces that rivaled fine jewelry until 1970, with final production ending around 1973.
Design Characteristics: DeNicola pins are known for high-quality, complex designs, often in gold-tone metal, frequently featuring pearls, poured glass, and semi-precious stones.
Notable Collections:
“The Real Look” (1962): Featured marine life and, and later, highly collectible Zodiac signs.
“Young America” (1964): A well-regarded collection featuring intricate metalwork.
Whimsical Figurals: Designs often included bunnies, frogs, and lions.
Maker’s Mark: Pieces are usually signed “DeNicola” or “DeNicola, pat pend”.
Acquisition: In 1970, DeNicola became part of the CAPRI jewelry company.
Collectible Value: DeNicola pins are highly sought after by collectors, particularly for their detailed figural themes and, on occasion, for rare pieces that used poured glass cells.
