About these large Mid Century Swarovski Crystal Crosses,
Google AI reference:
Large AB (Aurora Borealis) Swarovski crystal-centered cross brooches were primarily made in the mid-to-late 1950s and 1960s. While Swarovski created the AB coating in 1955 in collaboration with Christian Dior, the popularity of these “rainbow effect” crystals, particularly in large, 3D layered or Maltese cross designs, flourished throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Key Details Regarding Mid-Century AB Cross Brooches:
Origin of AB Crystals: Daniel Swarovski created the Aurora Borealis (AB) effect in 1955.
Production Era: Most vintage AB cross brooches date to the mid-century period, specifically the 1950s and 1960s, often produced in Austria or Germany.
Design Characteristics: These brooches are often characterized by a large, central chaton (25mm or larger) or dramatic marquise-shaped stones surrounded by smaller AB crystals.
Styles: Popular styles included layered starbursts, Maltese crosses, and ornate, high-domed designs in rhodium-plated or gold-tone settings.
These pieces were popular as “statement” jewelry during the 1950s and 1960s, designed to capture light and enhance outfits.
