Google AI Reference for Authentic 1930s Marcasite Jewelry:
Authentic Art Deco marcasite jewelry (circa 1920s-1930s) is distinguished from later reproductions by examining settings, as authentic pieces have stones prong-set individually, whereas reproductions often use glue. Genuine items show true patina and aging on sterling silver.

Key Identification Tips:
Setting Method: In true vintage pieces, each tiny marcasite stone is securely set with tiny metal prongs or “rivets” to hold them in place. Reproductions often feature glue or simply set the stones into a pre-cast base where they appear loose.
Metal Patina and Backing: Authentic Art Deco pieces often use silver or low-karat white gold. Look for genuine, uneven tarnishing and a patina in recessed areas, which signifies age.
Design Quality: Authentic pieces showcase detailed, precise filigree and milgrain (tiny bead-like decorations) made by hand rather than mass-produced casts.
Weight and Feel: Due to the detailed metalwork and, sometimes, natural silver content, authentic pieces generally feel more delicate or heavier compared to lightweight, uniform modern reproductions.
Hallmarks: Check for “Sterling,” “925,” or specific European hallmarks.
