Description
Made in 1935 during King George V and Queen Mary’s Silver Jubilee Year by one of the most highly regarded London silver makers, CJ Vander (Cornelius Joshua Vander/Vanderpump). CJ Vander was one of the most famous past preeminent traditional British silversmithing firms of the 20th century. Very, Very HEAVY Gauge to resist dents, dings, etc….
The Hallmarks are identifies as follows:
- Maker’s Mark (C.J.V / LTD): The first stamp shows the initials of the manufacturer, C.J. Vander Ltd, stacked inside a clean rectangular punch. Since the firm officially incorporated and appended “Ltd” to its name in 1930, this specific mark style could only be used after that year.
- The Standard Mark: The second stamp features the Lion Passant (a walking lion facing left). This is the historical British symbol confirming the item is solid 925 sterling silver.
- The City Mark: The third stamp is the Leopard’s Head, representing the Loindon assay office.
- The Date Letter (u): The fourth stamp displays a lowercase, italicized u inside a shield with a rounded base. In the London alphabet cycle, this precise typeface and border design marks the piece as assayed in 1935.
- The Commemorative Mark: The final, larger stamp on the far right is the King George V and Queen Mary Silver Jubilee Mark. This special optional mark featuring the profiles of the King and Queen was only authorized for strikes in 1935 to celebrate the 25th year of their reign. Its presence perfectly corroborates the 1935 date letter.
